KREEDA runs OEM and ODM treadmill manufacturing programs for distributors, importers, retailers and fitness brands. We are the treadmill brand of Ningbo Kangruida Sports Equipment Co., Ltd., a manufacturer based in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China.
This page explains the difference between the two routes, what each one requires from you, and where buyers usually get caught out.
OEM vs ODM: the practical difference
OEM (original equipment manufacturing) means you own the specification. You bring the design, the engineering drawings or a reference product to match, and we manufacture to it. Your brand appears on the machine and the packaging. You generally own the tooling you pay for.
ODM (original design manufacturing) means you select from designs that already exist. In our case that means choosing from the KREEDA range and customising brand, colour, finish, packaging and market-specific configuration. Nothing has to be designed from scratch, which shortens the path to a first shipment and lowers your upfront cost.
| Question | OEM | ODM |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the design | You | The manufacturer |
| Upfront tooling cost | Usually yes | Usually none |
| Differentiation from competitors | Highest | Limited to branding and configuration |
| Minimum commitment needed | Higher | Lower — you are buying an existing model |
| Time to first shipment | Longer | Shorter |
| Best for | Established brands building a proprietary line | Distributors and e-commerce sellers entering the category |
Most first-time importers should start with ODM to test a market, then move selected best-selling models to OEM once they know what sells.
What we need from you to start
- The product category (see our treadmill products page for the seven families we build)
- Destination market, so voltage, plug, labelling and documentation are correct
- Whether this is OEM or ODM, and which parts you want customised — housing, frame, console, colour, decals, packaging
- Your brand assets and packaging artwork, if branding is part of the program
- Target order quantity, so we can quote against a realistic production run
How the process runs
- Specification. We confirm what is being built, against which drawing or which KREEDA model, plus the market configuration.
- Sample. You evaluate a sample before mass production is authorised. This is the point where specification problems get caught, not after the container ships.
- Tooling and production preparation. For OEM, tooling is made and first-article checks are agreed.
- Production. Manufactured against the approved specification.
- Inspection and shipping. Inspection at agreed stages, then packing, marking and export documentation for your market.
Two things buyers get wrong
Assuming certifications transfer. A test report covers a specific model and a specific electrical configuration. If you change the motor, the control board or the drive system for your market, the documentation may no longer describe what you are importing. Verify scope against your exact configuration — our Certifications & Enterprise Honors page records what we hold, and we will tell you which documents apply to yours.
Not settling IP and tooling ownership in writing. Who owns the mould, the drawing and the right to reorder should be agreed before tooling is cut, not after a good product starts selling. Several KREEDA models are covered by design patents — ask us which configurations are protected in your market before assuming a look is free to copy.
Why buyers work with a factory rather than a trading company
A trading company quotes you a price and then buys from a factory. That adds a margin and a communication layer, and it usually means nobody on your side of the conversation can change a specification. When you work directly with the manufacturer, specification changes, sample iteration and after-sales spare parts can all be handled by the people who build the machine.
You should verify this claim for any supplier, including us. See our guide on how to verify a treadmill supplier in China for the checks that separate a factory from a reseller.
