If you are placing a first treadmill order, the product family you lead with decides your freight cost, your target buyer and how much after-sales risk you are carrying. Here is how to choose between a home treadmill and a walking pad, and when to import both.
The short answer
Lead with a walking pad if your market is apartment-dense, your buyers are price-sensitive, or you want to test the category with limited capital. Lead with a home treadmill if you are selling to buyers who already exercise, if your channel is specialty retail, or if your customers compare products on running capability rather than on price.
What actually differs
| Decision | Walking pad | Home treadmill |
|---|---|---|
| Storage footprint after use | Small — flat, low profile | Larger — needs dedicated space |
| Units per container | Higher, lower landed cost per unit | Lower, higher landed cost per unit |
| Typical buyer | First-time buyer, small apartment | Existing exerciser, family home |
| Competes on | Price and convenience | Running capability and features |
| Returns and after-sales risk | Lower unit value, lower claim cost | Higher unit value, costlier claims |
| Damaged-in-transit exposure | Light but bulky cartons | Heavier, more sensitive to handling |
| Sales story for retail staff | Simple to explain | Needs demonstration and specification talk |
No figures are shown above on purpose. Motor ratings, deck sizes and weight limits vary by model, and the numbers that matter are the ones printed on the specification sheet of the exact model you are quoting — we will give you those against a specific inquiry rather than as a generic range.
Choose a walking pad first when
- Your buyers are in apartment-dense cities where storage is the deciding constraint
- You want to enter at a price point that does not require a specialist sales floor
- You are selling online, where a compact, easily shipped product is easier to fulfil and return
- You want to test demand before committing capital to a bulkier product family
- Your channel is office, corporate wellness or light institutional use
See the current range on our walking pads page, and the market-specific considerations in our walking pad wholesale sourcing guide for emerging markets.
Choose a home treadmill first when
- Your buyers already run or train, and will compare specifications rather than price
- Your channel is specialty fitness retail, where staff can demonstrate the product
- Your market has the floor space and the household income for a larger machine
- You can support a higher unit value with a spare parts path

When to import both
The two families sell to different buyers, so carrying both is usually stronger than carrying either alone — provided your quantities still make sense per model. The practical sequence most buyers follow:
- Start with one walking pad model and one home treadmill model, and see which sells through faster.
- Re-order the winner in depth rather than widening the range immediately.
- Add a differentiated model — a 2-in-1 treadmill desk, for example, or a configuration covered by a design patent — once you know which buyer you are actually serving.
Resist starting with ten SKUs. Ten slow-moving models cost you warehouse space, tie up capital and make it harder to re-order the one product that is working.
Before you order from anyone
Whichever family you choose, verify the supplier first. Our checklist is at how to verify a treadmill supplier in China, and the OEM versus ODM decision is set out in OEM & ODM treadmill manufacturing.
Ask us which family fits your market
Tell us your destination country, your sales channel and the buyer you are targeting, and we will tell you which of our product families we would lead with — including when the answer is not the one you expected.
